Hello Brother and Sisters,
As I sit here at National Convention surrounded by CUPE members from
all over the country I am inspired to write a report for our local.
The convention has started off with a bang. Paul Moist – National
President- reminded us about the important role of unions and that is
Solidarity. A few months ago the membership passed a motion to send
a letter to the City of Toronto workers. I was thrilled to listen to
the thanks from representatives from those locals. I know that our
members are proud to know that our letter of support helped these
CUPE members in a time of need. It also reminds me that we, too, can
expect support from across the country if we ever needed it.
Our local is going through major transitions. We have new by-laws
that have been presented to the membership that will change the
administration of the local (allowing more representation from all the
units) but not the spirit. We have a new campaign to have our members
united pre-bargaining for unit 1 and united with all units of our
local for successful bargaining for all units. Look for me in the
next few months as I spend my lunch hours entering each department to
talk with you one on one. It will be a time for you to meet with me,
share your concerns, and have open and honest dialogue for a strong
local.
We are also at a time where we need to fill every committee. Being on
a committee is a perfect opportunity for any of our members to help
support our local without the huge responsibility that you imagined.
For example, you are interested in communication and have a talented
for writing. Here is an opportunity where you can use your talents to
help serve our local by being on the communication committee. You
have a talent in bringing people together to celebrate, come use your
talent in that area on our Job Action committee.
The next few months will be crucial for our membership. Your
executive will be preparing an Action Plan for 2010 that will outline
our goals for our local and how we will accomplish them. We will be
introducing new education courses and learning opportunities. We will
introduce service projects to help and support SFU students. We will
gather as a local in more social situations so we connect as workers.
Your executive appreciates all of your continuing support and hope for
it in the coming months.
In solidarity,
Melanie Kovaltsenko
